NUS Formula SAE Race Car Team returns safely after an eventful competition!
The NUS Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Race Car Team returned from an eventful competition in Romeo, Michigan, USA, greatly enriched though somewhat disappointed as their race car (No. 78) finished 78 overall, having decided to forgo the crucial 22 km endurance event. This difficult decision was made although the team had succeeded in re-designing and re-fabricating a new drive train to replace a damaged differential gear system of the car, all within the space of 30 hours. Team Advisor, Prof KH Seah remarked that this feat of engineering speed was "comparable to Mozart composing his Linz symphony in just three days"! Of 130 race car teams that entered the competition, the NUS team had achieved 10th position for presentation and tied in 14th place with a number of other teams in the design aspect of the competition. Everything had been going smoothly until a practice run on 17 May 07 by team member Heng Lee, during which the TORSEN differential gear housing wall gave way, damaging the worm gears inside. The worm gears had apparently misengaged and hit against the differential gear housing wall - another case of Murphy's Law at work! Prof Seah's "never-say-die final year guys" then went well beyond the call of duty, sacrificing much sleep in responding to the difficult situation. Despite the disappointment of not being able to complete all events in the race, the team valued the experience and learnt a lot about engineering design from the competition, especially from the judges' feedback. Eco-friendly inventions of ME students get attention of the Press!
The 7 ME team members are spending 6 months with a company, which manufactures fabric, which has minute particles of bamboo charcoal in its weave. The team has two inventions using the company's fabric. One invention is a sleeping pack, which combines the essentials of a backpack and a sleeping bag for mountaineers. The other is a pair of changeable slippers, which will allow the user to create three different looks, simply by adjusting the straps! The two inventions were reported in a Straits Times article on 17 May 07, entitled, "NUS team gets a helping hand from alumnus". |

ME Alumnus, Phua Boon Wee shares his experience of working in a multi-national off-shore company!
ME Alumnus, Phua Boon Wee from the class of 2003 shares his experience with the multinational company, FMC Technologies, which he joined after graduating. Within 5 months, was whisked off to the largest and supposedly the 'most dangerous' state in the US, Texas! He found the one year that he eventually spent in Houston, Texas as probably been the most enriching time of his life so far. Now, back home as a subsea applications engineer, he works in project teams just like the design teams for projects during his school years. Project work reminds him of the several intriguing design projects he and his friends had to undertake in their days in NUS, and the unforgettable 'Fishing rod' and the 'Hull crawler' that they had to design! Three years after graduation, his memories of those long and frustrating but yet hugely enriching and fruitful days spent in the Pavilion outside the Design Laboratory remain just as fresh. To him, it really felt at times that it was only yesterday that he graduated and the hunger he felt in those days for greater self-exposure, knowledge and experience remains just as strong if not stronger!
