Industrial drying is a major energy-intensive operation encountered in most industrial sectors. Dryers can be considered heat and mass exchangers. Design of dryers requires knowledge of coupled heat and mass transfer along with the material properties. In this section of ME5202 to be presented by Professor Mujumdar, we will provide an overview of the classification and selection of industrial dryers, mechanism of drying, calculation of drying rates and design strategies and some design case studies. As a special topic, we will discuss fluidized bed dryers.
