The 5th Asia Pacific Drying Conference (ADC07) has been held in August 2007 on the campus of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Clear Water Bay, Hong Kong, with Professor Guohua Chen of the Chemical Engineering Department at HKUST as the Program Chair.

The 5 th Asia-Pacific Drying Conference

13-15 August 2007, HKUST, HK, China

  Conference Report

The 5 th Asia-Pacific Drying Conference was successfully held 13-15 th August 2007 at the conference venue on the campus of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong.

This conference received 245 abstracts by authors from 33 countries and regions. Later,

218 full papers were submitted by the authors for review. With a rigorous review process involving two peer review reports for each paper, 9 papers were rejected. The revised papers were carefully reviewed again, following which 195 papers were edited and published in the conference proceedings. The total page count of the two-volume proceedings is 1361, published by World Scientific, ISBN-13 978-981-277-998-4. A few copies of the proceedings are available for sale at the conference price. Please send your order to adc07@ust.hk should you wish to purchase a set.

Selected papers will be published in special issues of Drying Technology Journal, Journal of Applied Thermal Engineering, Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering, and International Journal of Food Engineering.

There were 166 registered delegates from 29 countries and regions. The top five countries or regions in terms of numbers of delegates except Hong Kong (15) are: China (40), Thailand (15), Japan (14), Malaysia (9), and Australia (7).

Professor Arun S Mujumdar, the founder and honorary Chairman of IDS delivered a plenary lecture after the opening ceremony. There were a total of 12 keynote lectures invited, including one from industry. Details can be found from the Technical Program at the conference web site.

This conference granted the first Arun S Mujumdar Medal, a prestigious award established by students and friends of the Drying Guru in his name, to recognize a person who has made outstanding contributions to drying R&D, mentoring younger generations and promoting drying research on a truly global scale. The first recipient of the Arun S Mujumdar Medal is Professor Czeslaw Strumillo of Lodz Technical University, Poland , who is well known to the world drying community for his extensive pioneering contributions to drying research, service to international community as well as for mentoring several outstanding researchers in drying. This medal recognizes outstanding contributions to research, service and mentoring- a unique combination of fields of excellence critical to the continuing progress of drying R&D.

The World Forum of Crystallization, Filtration and Drying ( WFCFD) granted its Award of Excellence to Professor Guohua Chen. This is an award administrated by WFCFD independent of the ADC07.

The Distinguished Awards of the Conference , initiated by the Conference Chairman and endorsed by the Chairman of the Awards Committee, ADC07, go to Professor Arun Mujumdar , for his visionary move in establishing IDS, his continuous promotion of global drying R&D, his outstanding achievements in drying R&D, his successful mentoring of young generations of drying researchers, and Mrs. Purnima Mujumdar , for her sustained outstanding support and service contributions to drying community.

During the conference, the Members of Editorial Board or Guest-Editors of Drying Technology Journal held a dinner meeting with sponsorship from Taylor and Francis Group. Current status of the journal was reported and the future strategies of further development were discussed.
