ME6303 Advanced Fluid Dynamics
This is an advanced course in general fluid dynamics for graduate students. It covers a wide range of topics, including both viscous and inviscid flow. We start by deriving the Navier-Stokes equations and finding some basic laminar solutions. Subsequent treatment focuses on simplified cases of low-Reynolds number viscous dominated flows: linear superposition of solutions, reversibility and high-Reynolds number flows: inviscid potential flow, boundary layers, Hele-Shaw model, vorticity dynamics and free-surface flows. Finally we study stability of fluid flow: inertial instability, shear flow instability, centrifugal instability, Taylor-Couette flow and basic laminar-turbulent transition in shear flows. Some phenomena are demonstrated in laboratory experiments. |
