1. Introduction
H.M. Shang obtained his BEng(Mech Eng) degree from the then University of Singapore in 1970, after which he obtained his MSc(Prod Eng) and PhD(Mech Eng) degrees from the University of Aston in Birmingham, UK sponsored by the Commonwealth Scholarship. He joined the Department of Mechanical and Production Engineering, NUS n 1974 and is currently a Professor. He is instrumental in setting up the Laser Laboratory together with his colleagues since 1982; the main thrust of research is in flaw detection and profile measurement using optical techniques. Many funded research projects in these areas have been completed and many postgraduate students have also graduated. He has also served as reviewer for international journals of reputable standing. Currently, he is also serving in the Editorial Board of Composites Engineering.
