1.  Introduction

Dr Toh obtained his BSc (Eng) degree and PhD from the University of Strathclyde, UK. He worked for four years as a project engineer with Babcock Power Ltd in UK mainly on the stress analysis of boiler components. He joined the NUS in 1981. He is a member of the Society of Experimental Mechanics, USA and SPIE - the international society for optical engineering. He is a member of the Advisory Committee, Ngee Ann Polytechnic. He is member of the Executive Committee of the Biomedical Engineering Society (Singapore) and the Community Service Community of the IES, Singapore. He has carried out numerous consultancy projects for the local industry in the areas of stress analysis.
