Nano-Wafer Level Packaging Program

Student Enrollment

          The Nano-Wafer Level Packaging (NWLP) program can provide students with two types of scholarship which includes the National Science Scholarship (BS-PhD Scholarship and Overseas PhD Scholarship) and the NUS Research Scholarship. Details regarding the eligibility and the service commitment for each of these scholarships are given below. For additional information, interested parties can forward their inquiries to either Professor Andrew Tay at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, National University of Singapore or Professor Rao Tummala at the Georgia Institute of Technology, U.S.A.

The National Science Scholarship (NSS)

          The National Science Scholarships are offered by the Singapore Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). The two types of scholarships which are currently available include the BS-PhD Scholarship and the Overseas PhD Scholarship. Information relating to these scholarships can also be found at the NSS A*STAR website.

BS-PhD Scholarship

          This scholarship offers support for both undergraduate as well as postgraduate studies up to the Ph.D. level at selected overseas Universities, such as the Georgia Institute of Technology. Successful candidates will be given support for up to 8 years of academic pursuit, leading to a Ph.D. degree. Eligibility:

  • Candidates should have at least 4 distinctions in relevant 'A' level subjects and preferably 2 'S' paper.

  • Candidates are expected to take SAT I (minimum score of 1400) and encouraged to take SAT II.

  • Candidates with the passion and excellence in science-related projects/activities will be preferred.

  • Open to Singaporean and Permanent Residents (successful candidates who are Permanent Residents are expected to take up Singapore citizenship).

Successful Candidates will Receive:

  • Full tuition fees, annual book and conference allowance.

  • Monthly sustenance allowance.

  • Monthly overseas allowance (applicable only for the Ph.D. component).

  • Annual return airfare.

  • Computer allowance.

  • Warm clothing and settling-in allowance.

Service Commitment:

Upon completion, candidates will return to contribute to the various research institutions, Universities or industries in Singapore for 6 years.

Closing Date:

31st March annually.

Overseas PhD Scholarship

          This scholarship offers support for postgraduate research training in various science and engineering disciplines. Successful candidates will be given support for up to 5 years of postgraduate studies. Eligibility:

  • Candidates with a First/Second Upper Class Honours degree or a GPA of 3.8 and above from US universities or a CAP of 4.5 and above from local universities in relevant disciplines will be considered.

  • Applicants should have gained or be in the process of gaining admission into a top overseas university.

  • Preference will be given to those with a strong interest in a research career.

  • Expect to take Graduate Record Exam (GRE) General and Subject tests. (General test should have a minimum score of 1400 for verbal + quantitative and 4.5 for analytical writing.).

  • Open to Singaporean and Permanent Residents (Successful candidates who are Permanent Residents are expected to take up Singapore citizenship).

Successful Candidates will Receive:

  • Full tuition fees, annual book and conference allowance.

  • Monthly sustenance allowance.

  • Monthly overseas allowance.

  • Annual return airfare.

  • Computer allowance.

  • Warm clothing and settling-in allowance.

Service Commitment:

Upon completion, candidates will return to contribute to the various research institutions, Universities or industries in Singapore for 4 years.

Closing Date:

31st March & 30th September annually.

The NUS Research Scholarship

The NUS Research Scholarship is solely funded by National University of Singapore.

Successful Candidates will Receive:

  • Full tuition and conference allowance

  • S$ 2,000 per month for a Ph.D. student after qualification (up to 3 years)

  • S$ 1,500 per month for a Masters student (up to two years)

Eligibility of Applicants:

  • Candidates with a First/Upper Second Class Honours degree or a GPA of 3.8 and above in relevant disciplines will be considered.

  • Applicants should have gained or be in the process of gaining admission into an approved University.

  • Preference will be given to those with a strong interest in establishing a research career.

  • Candidates applying to U.S. Universities are expected to take the TOFEL, Graduate Record Examination (GRE), General and Subject tests.

  • The National Science Scholarship (Overseas Graduate Scholarships) is open to Singaporeans and Permanent Residents of Singapore.

  • The National Science Scholarship (Local Graduate Scholarship) and the NUS Research Scholarship are open to applicants of all nationalities.

Service Commitment:

  • The awardees of the National Science Scholarship (Overseas Graduate Scholarship) will return to Singapore upon completion of their study to contribute to the various research institutions, Universities or industries in Singapore for a duration of 4 years.

  • The awardees of the National Science Scholarship (Local Graduate Scholarship) will serve the bond for up to 3 years (depending on the length of overseas attachment). 

  • There is no bond for the NUS Research Scholarship
