王素琴博士出生于新加坡，毕业于新加坡国立大学机械工程系（荣誉学位），获新加坡国立大学机械工程博士学位（制造工程）。王素琴博士现任新加坡国立大学机械工程系副教授。

王素琴副教授在2003年被美国制造工程师协会（SME) 遴选为2004全球最优秀的青年制造工程师之一，成为亚细安第一位获颁这项殊荣，杰出青年制造工程师奖项 (Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award)，的女工程师。这项奖项的设立至今，她是亚细安第一位获得这项奖项的女学者和制造工程研究员。

在2004年，王素琴博士和她的"师傅"倪亦靖教授，两人连同一名研究生，也荣获制造业学刊《国际生产研究杂志》(International Journal of Production Research) 所颁发 Norman Dudley 奖项。得奖论文主要探讨如何将两种人工智能的方法结合起来，分析跟改良产品的设计和生产过程，评审团认为，有关论文具备对制造业作出显著贡献的最大潜能。

王素琴副教授在2004年获得新加坡青年杰出奖（科技组）。新加坡杰出青年奖是全国最高荣誉的青年奖项。在2006，她被遴选为新加坡十大杰出青年奖(科技组)。

王素琴副教授在2009年被美国女性工程师协会(SWE)获颁2009脱出领袖奖(学术组)。她是新加坡第一位获得这项奖项的女学者和制造工程研究员。

王素琴副教授在2012年获选成为国际制造工程科研究院 (International Academy for Production Engineering Research, CIRP)的院士，她是亚洲第一位获选成为该学院院士的女学者。

王素琴副教授目前有几个研究方向。一个研究方向是产品生命周期工程的设计研究 (Life Cycle Engineering)，鼓励厂家将环保概念引进产品的设计和制造过程，因为随着环保意识加强，清洁生产绿色产品，将成为今后的发展主流。另一个研究方向是现实与虚拟制造 (Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality in Manufacturing)，及分布性和协同性的数字与网络交互设计与制造 (Distributed and Collaborative Design and Manufacturing)。

王素琴副教授编写了五本专题书，分别在1999，2004，2006及2009年出版。她也撰写和发表了超过200篇论文，刊登在国际研究杂志和研究讨论会的报告。

此外，王素琴副教授现被委任为新加坡第十届第二期国会官委议员，任期从2005年1月2日至2006年4月19日。

王素琴副教授荣获2006年的“杰出青年奖”（The Outstanding Young Persons），由新加坡国际青年商会（Junior Chamber of Singapore）属下的兰花女青商会（Orchid Jayceettes）颁发。

Samsung DigitAll HOPE Award, November 2005, A team led by Associate Professor Ong Soh Khim and Professor Andrew Nee has won the Samsung DigitAll Hope 2005 for their project Augmented Reality Assistive Keyboard. They share the prize, a grant of US$500,000 with 11 others from Southeast Asia and Australia. The team has invented a device which marries Assistive and Augmented Reality technologies, to help the elderly and disabled use full computer functions in composing and sending emails, control household appliances, such as television sets and lights. Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Welfare Foundation (MSIWF) Research Award 2010 Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Welfare Foundation. There are only 4 awards in Singapore in 2010. The team is awarded this award for their research project on an 'Augmented Reality-Enhanced Navigation Assistance System'.

Parliamentary Speeches and Questions

During her term as an NMP from 2nd January 2005 to 19th April 2006, she participated actively in the parliament debates on the President’s Address, the Annual Budget Debates in 2005 and 2006, development of the Integrated Resorts, National Kidney Foundation, and the Committees of Supply debates. She raised issues on and spoke on the Education System in Singapore, Singapore’s R&D landscape, assistance schemes to help men in need, as well as the schemes to help the low wage workers. She raised a total of 87 questions and issues, spoken on 6 Bills, and made 19 speeches, of which 6 speeches were made in Mandarin, during her term and had made good contribution to the debate on policy issues at the national level. The 6 Bills that she spoke on were (1) National Research Fund Bill, (2) Casino Control Bill, (3) National University of Singapore (Corporatisation) Bill, (4) Public Transport Council (Amendment) Bill, (5) Professional Engineers (Amendment) Bill, and (6) Town Councils (Amendment) Bill. She was the only NMP in the last batch of 9 NMPs to have raised an adjournment motion in the Parliament. The topic of her motion was Singapore’s National Research and Development Strategic Thrusts.
